Most vehicle locks in automotive applications are currently manufactured from various plastic materials. With increased vehicle safety and security requirements, higher strength materials are sought for these applications. Therefore, die cast zinc alloys are becoming attractive alternative to the plastics for applications such as door and ignition locks.

However, there is a lack of data on mechanical properties of Zn alloys as related to lock applications. In order to generate property data comparable to the properties of the plastic materials currently used, a mechanical testing program was conducted.  This project established tensile and compressive strength, impact resistance, flexural modulus, and fatigue properties of die cast samples of zinc alloys. The properties were determined using the standard testing methods that were used to determine the same properties of the plastic materials for the mentioned applications to the extent possible.

It is also desirable to test zinc die castings without machining, first because this is how many die castings are actually used, and second because the skin of the zinc die casting, approximately 100 microns thick, is normally the strongest and toughest part of the part. Die cast specimens of Alloys 2, 3, 5, ZA-8, and AcuZinc 5 were tested in this program in as cast condition.   Tensile and compression tests were performed at -40ºC, -20ºC, 0ºC, 22ºC, 75ºC, and 135ºC.
